Eight Jesuits, One of Them from Vietnam, Ordained Deacons in Manila, Philippines

Most Rev. Sofronio A. Bancud, SSS, DD, bishop of the diocese of Cabanatuan, ordained nine men to the order of diaconate on 26 October at the Church of the Gesù, Ateneo de Manila University in Manila, Philippines. Among the nine ordinands, eight were Jesuits including one Jesuit from the Vietnam Province: Rev. Peter Tran Hoan Chinh, SJ.

Most Rev. Sofronio A. Bancud, SSS, DD, bishop of the diocese of Cabanatuan, ordained nine men to the order of diaconate on 26 October at the Church of the Gesù, Ateneo de Manila University in Manila, Philippines. Among the nine ordinands, eight were Jesuits including one Jesuit from the Vietnam Province: Rev. Peter Tran Hoan Chinh, SJ. Also ordained was one member of the Missionary Community of Saint Paul the Apostle.

Fr. Tony Moreno, SJ, President of the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific, concelebrated the Ordination Mass with Fr. Jun Viray, SJ, Philippine Provincial, Fr. Riyo Mursanto, SJ, Rector of Arrupe International Residence, Fr. Junjun Borres, SJ, Rector of Loyola House of Studies and Jesuits from Philippine Province, Korean Province, Vietnamese Province and Myanmar Mission. Family and friends of the newly ordained deacons were also present in the Mass.

The newly ordained deacons are:

  • Michael Kim Hakjoon, SJ (Korea)
  • Martino Kim Minho, SJ (Korea)
  • Stephen Kim Woojung, SJ (Korea)
  • Thomas Kim Hyunjhik, SJ (Korea)
  • Robbie John Paolo Paraan, SJ (Philippines)
  • Amado Tumbali, Jr., SJ (Philippines)
  • Paul Tu Ja, SJ (Myanmar)
  • Peter Tran Hoan Chinh, SJ (Vietnam)
  • Victor Owino Otieno, MCSPA (Kenya)

The new Vietnamese deacon, Chinh, 34, was born in Daklak province in the Central Plateau Vietnam. He studied International Relations at HCMC University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology, Saigon, Vietnam. He joined the candidacy programme of the Society of Jesus in 2004. He was admitted to the Sacred Heart Novitiate in 2009, and subsequently studied philosophy at St. Joseph Jesuit Scholasticate in Saigon. After three years of philosophy studies, he was assigned to the student ministry for his two-year regency in Vinh diocese in central Vietnam before starting his theology studies at the Loyola School of Theology, Ateneo de Manila University, living in the Arrupe International Residence, Manila, Philippines.
