Three Vietnamese Jesuits were ordained to the diaconate in Manila

19 young men from three congregations (The Society of Jesus, The Spiritans, and The Missionary Community of Saint Paul the Apostle) were ordained to the diaconate on 8 October in the Church of the Gesù at the Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City, Philippines. Of these, 14 were from the Jesuit conferences of Asia Pacific, Africa and Madagascar, and South Asia.

Three Vietnamese Jesuits: Rev. Anthony Tran Phi Lam, SJ, Rev. Joseph Nguyen Van Luong, SJ, and Rev. Peter Nguyen Huy Quy, SJ, were among 14 Jesuits ordained deacons by the Most Reverend Honesto F Ongtioco DD, Bishop of Cubao. 

Anthony Tran Phi Lam, SJ, 36, is from Daklak province of Vietnam. He studied Chinese-English language at Ton Duc Thang University in Sai Gon. He joined the Candidacy House of the Society of Jesus in 2004 and entered the Sacred Heart Novitiate in 2011. After three years of studying philosophy at St. Joseph Jesuit Scholasticate , he was sent to Myanmar, where he did regency at the Candidacy House and St. Aloysius Gonzaga Institute for three years. He is still studying his STB at the Loyola School of Theology and master program in Pastoral Ministry at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Joseph Nguyen Van Luong, SJ, 35,  graduated from Hanoi University of Culture in 2009 and joined the Candidacy House of the Vietnamese Province in 2010. He was admitted to the Sacred Heart Novitiate in Thu Duc in 2011. He took his first vows in 2013 and studied philosophy at St Joseph Scholasticate in Thu Duc before being sent to Thailand for his 3-year regency. After regency, he was sent to the Philippines and studied theology at Loyola School of Theology in 2019.

Peter Nguyen Huy Quy, SJ, 40, is from Ha Tinh province in the North of Vietnam. He studied Land Management at the Agriculture and Forestry University in Hue City. He joined the Jesuit Candidacy House in 2010 and entered the Sacred Heart Novitiate in 2012 in Thu Duc. After taking his first vows in 2014, he studied philosophy at St. Joseph Jesuit Scholasticate for three years. After finishing the philosophy program, he was sent to Myanmar, where he learned Burmese for one year and did regency at Thinggyangyun for another year. He is currently studying STB at the Loyola School of Theology and the Professional Diploma in Family Ministry and Counselling at CEFAM at the Ateneo de Manila University.
